Buyer Reviews
Like a great number of guys I've spent time undertaking construction. My very first cordless drill was the original Makita, which lasted me through a couple of battery replacements. Considering that I'd gotten back to a desk and had lost the wrist strength to a use pro grade cordless, I replaced it with a Black Decker VPX1212X Li-Ion 14.four-Volt VPX Drill Driver, which is light adequate to use and potent adequate to drive screws by means of 2x4s. For larger jobs, though its batteries didn't final extended sufficient and took as well lengthy to recharge.
Enter the DeWALT. With its lithium ion batteries, it's light sufficient for me to use for hours. The batteries last for hours, as well. I spent all day placing up a fence. The 1st battery got me via lunch and into the afternoon. I gave out prior to the second battery did about time to put some fish on the grill. It has plenty of power. It is not an impact driver drill, which tends to make is slightly much less powerful. On the plus side of that it has an adjustable clutch. When I get tired I rely on that a lot to not overdrive screws. It has two speeds. High is a lot quick sufficient to run a drill. Low has a variable speed, which is great on delicate operate. The manage is just ideal for my med-big glove size and can be applied by those with smaller hands.
The drill has all the little characteristics I'd expect on a pro model. There is an LED light, a lanyard clip and a belt clip, as properly as a clip to hold a screw bit. One great touch is that the belt clip and screw bit holder are removable and can be switched for left handed users. It has a 1/2 inch chuck.
I have a 25 year old DeWALT belt sander and a Porter Cable (similar corporation) orbital sander that are each nonetheless going robust and have often thought to be DeWalt to make rugged and dependable tools. This has a 3 year restricted warrante and a 1 year complete one particular. As a residence owner I count on this to last, although lithium ion batteries have a definite shelf life limit.

I loved this drill when I first got it, so I am going to chalk up my challenge to it becoming a a single-off situation (see "Knowledge" section).
Pros:
1. Great ergonomics. I just wanted to hold my new drill because it feels fantastic to hold. I caught my close friends selecting up my drill to feel it in their hand.
2. Light weight. It really is extraordinary how significantly torque such a tiny piece of equipment can produce.
3. Sturdy ratcheting chuck. The chuck feels solid - way much more strong than any of the other compact drills I have examined. I didn't expertise any discernible wobble challenges.
four. Batteries charge rapidly (less than 30 min.) and have a extended run-time.
five. LED light helps illuminate target surface from a distance. (I didn't comprehend how beneficial this feature would be. Added bonus.)
Cons:
1. LED suffers from shadow cast by the chuck when up close to target surface.
two. Weak manual on one particular sheet of paper. They could definitely increase upon that with a booklet and a larger font.
Expertise:
I was in the middle of installing a closet technique in my master bedroom. Toward the finish of the project, I was driving screws into MDF shelving when I pulled the trigger and the drill started out clicking but not really spinning. I also started to smell something burning, so looked at the motor component of the drill and pulled the trigger. I will admit that I wasn't wearing goggles (poor), and anything modest (speck-sized) hit me in the eye. I was able to get the drill spinning again just after pulling the trigger a couple additional instances, but the identical thing happened again. The drill also created a rather subtle clicking sound from that point. Luckily I was actually on my final screw, so I was in a position to finish the project. I returned the drill not sure if I wanted to give Dewalt another shot. In the finish, I just seriously liked the drill and want it to perform out, so I ordered the drill and impact driver combo kit to replace it. If I have anything productive to add to this review just after receiving the new set, I will update it.
Some persons are partial to Dewalt. Some individuals seem to complain that Dewalt tools are just over-priced Porter Cable tools. I am also ignorant of the power tool sector to have an opinion on that. I am just a new house-owner that has lots of fixing up to be performed. (Ever see "The Funds Pit"?) I just want a drill that is light, comfortable, and powerful, and I want the batteries to last. I looked at all respected brands and chose this a single given that of the size, weight, strong chuck and long lasting batteries.
I am rating the drill 3 stars due to my defective encounter. I hope to raise that to five stars if my new drill pans out. I really hope this was a one-off incident. I am also hoping that I don't get the dreaded "wobbly chuck" situation that other people have mentioned with the new drill...
UPDATE (two/23/12):
I received a clearly put to use combo kit in the mail. It had been resealed and the case was fairly scratched up. Top of all <sarcasm, the influence driver smelled like it was burning. I also decided to check out the chuck to see if there was the reported wobble, and yes, there was a definite wobble. (Please see the attached video. The bit in the drill spins straight in a few other drills. I was carrying out some hex driving and felt I required to document it. Sorry for the shadows. I have other videos of the chuck itself wobbling, but they are much less clear.)
Shipping me a applied and defective item was Amazon's fault. There is no way this kit need to have been sent back out. I have already ordered a replacement, but I am starting to honestly wonder about Dewalt's excellent just after checking out the wobble on the drill's chuck. I'm not going to alter my three star rating however, but if this one comes back with the identical chuck wobble or any burning concerns, I will...and I'll be changing brands. Remain tuned...
FINAL UPDATE (three/6/2012):
My last combo set arrived. This one appeared to be new (no scratches on case and it was not re-sealed). Both the drill and the influence driver smelled like they had been burning. Perhaps this is how they are supposed to smell, but if that's the case then Dewalt demands to at least be consistent. The truth that my initial and second drill did not (at least initially) smell like they were burning, but the third a single did indicates manufacturing problems to me. That becoming said, my big dilemma is not with the smell.
The third drill exhibited the similar noticeable wobble as the second drill. I am now very disappointed with Dewalt for permitting this item to make it into production with this issue. When I'm spending this a lot money on anything, I anticipate top quality. I like the ergonomics and capabilities of this drill, so I'm giving it two stars for possible. Till Dewalt gets its act together and fixes the chuck wobble, I advise looking elsewhere.
Side note: It seems that chuck wobble is reported in reviews of most, if not all, "high-finish" compact drills that I have looked at, so maybe there is a challenge acquiring a true chuck in such a tiny body.
